A few years ago, off Maui, Hawaii, I was with researchers Mark and Debbie Ferrari studying Humpbacks. We watched a mother and calf surface to breathe and submerge. Since the whales didn't seem to be going anywhere, we slipped into the water and swam over.

Looking down, I could see the mother whale 30 feet or so below hanging vertical in the water with her calf, barely visible in the afternoon light, nursing. I floated suspended over them for several minutes. The baby took a short break from feeding, swam up and around me, took a couple of breaths, and went back to nursing.

The entire episode lasted possibly 15 or 20 minutes, but seemed to go on much longer, and has stayed with me. BEGINNINGS is my interpretation of that wonderful, calm moment.

In the high Arctic, in waters teeming with life, some of the oceans' most comical animals live. The gregarious Beluga Whales form herds numbering in the hundreds, as they feed on flounder and other fish drawn to the smaller prey. Their chirps and whistles have caused them to be known as "sea canaries". In captivity they have been known as practical jokers, often taking mouthfuls of water and squirting it at trainers and other observers.

Millennia before the first humans hollowed out a log, grabbed a tree limb for a paddle, and went to sea, dolphins were already riding the pressure waves created by their cousins, the Great Whales. I've seen bottlenose dolphins "bowriding" on Humpbacks off Maui; this is my interpretation.

Quiet Waters; Daisy & Baby

Title: Quiet Waters; Daisy & Baby
Year Released: 1989    Edition: 350    Closing Price: $4,000.00
Dimensions: 15"H 15"W 9"D
Notes: Artist's Proof only

Until about ten years ago, the sight of a mother Humpback Whale and her calf resting or playing gently together a few hundred feet from shore on the western side of Maui was common. These quiet waters were a refuge for the calves where they could rest and grow strong for the migration at winter's end to the Alaskan feeding grounds.

Ten years ago, the peace in these waters began to be disturbed by the noise and activity of high-powered boats and jet-skis. The whales no longer rest close-in with the same frequency. They have apparantly been driven into the deeper, rougher waters further offshore.

Humpbacks often calve every year, yet the population in the North Pacific is not increasing. Could the rest denied to the nursing calves result in many of them not surviving the long migration? I don't know, but the sight of a mother Humpback and her calf resting off the beaches of west Maui is a much rarer sight since the noise of the jet ski and the speedboat came.

"Daisy" is a whale identified and studied since 1979 by Deborah Glocker-Ferrari for the Center for Whale Studies. It is to the spirit demonstrated by tenacious Humpbacks like "Daisy," who return every year to their Hawaiian home, that I dedicate the sculpture - QUIET WATERS.

Often, in Hawaiian waters or the Gulf of Alaska, the only sight of a breaching Humpback Whale that you see is a huge splash of white water in the distance. This is what causes it.

 Title: Storm Riders
Year Released: 1992    Edition: 350    Closing Price: $1,950.00

Striped Dolphins, among the prettiest animals in the sea, are deep water creatures. Their entire lives are spent in a world with no limits save the interface between air and sea. One "visited" a friend of mine on a cross-Atlantic sailing voyage, and STORM RIDERS is my interpretation of his visitor. Bud, this one's for you!

Around the world and throughout history, Bottlenose Dolphins have interacted with people along warm coast lines. On the Gulf Coast of Florida, they will flash past you as you play in the surf, and at Shark Bay, Australia, they come right up into knee deep water to "meet" people, sometimes even bringing fish to them as presents!

Twin Breach

 Title: Twin Breach

Anyone who has spent much time watching whales knows that it mostly consists of looking in the wrong direction when something is happening right behind you. The sort of thing that makes it worthwhile and makes whale watching among the most exciting "spectator sports" for me, is that once in a while you get to see something like a double breach.

One of the first times I saw Humpback Whales in Hawaii, two of them breached together half a dozen times a couple hundred yards from the boat. Two gigantic, 40-50 ton animals cleared the water together in an aerial ballet of titans. The image stuck in my mind for years, and TWIN BREACH depicts that memory.

Winters End

 Title: Winters End
Year Released: 1990    Edition: 350    Closing Price: $1,900.00
Dimensions: 10 1/2"H 12"W 8"D

Winter's End is the third in an informal series of sculptures which studies the aspects and activities of Humpbacks, as we begin to understand them. The size of this sub-yearling indicates nature's means of equipping the young for the challenges of the first year.

In late April, a mother Humpback whale and her calf, now more than half the length of its mother, begin the long migration to the northern feeding grounds. Here they will feed nearly 24 hours a day, for six months, on the teeming life of subarctic waters. However, they must first face a voyage of thousands of miles. Along the way they will face not only the natural dangers of ocean predators, sharks and orcas, but also collisions with vessels and perhaps the deadliest of all, the miles of drift nets set by the fishing fleets of many nations. Many won't survive the trip, but others will and hopefully as we learn more about these marvelous animals, we can adjust our behavior in ways to better insure their survival.

The Wishing Whale

 Title: The Wishing Whale
Year Released: 1989    Edition: 9    Closing Price: $40,000.00
Dimensions: 68"H 26"W 26"D

The human species seems, in my experience, to be incapable of passing any kind of body of water, particularily man-made; without throwing in coins. THE WISHING WHALE, pun intended, is designed to take advantage of this human ideosyncrasy. It is my hope that those who purchase this piece will install it in a place that will attract people's contributions, and that those contributions will be used for conservation, education and research.
